INdustry: ACR TV Deep Dive with Zeitera CEO
In this latest installment of INdustry, we delve into some of the more interesting insider issues around the emergence of automatic content recognition (ACR) on Smart TVs.
Our guest is Dan Eakins, CEO of ACR vendor Zeitera. Dan has been at this for quite some time and offers a thoughtful view of how things will play out in the coming years. In this interview, we dig in a bit into some of the fabric of this emerging marketplace.
A brief outline of the topics in the video, more or less in order:
Quick intro to ACR tech vendor Zeitera.
The ACR TV marketplace is heating up.
Competitive analysis of Zeitera and various competitors.
Market timing. What to expect in 2012-2014.
App-centric thinking is a mistake in some cases.
What drives market adoption?
How many mobile phones equal one Smart TV?
Can ACR be backwards compatible with existing TVs?
Is Dynamic Ad Insertion (DAI) really real?
If so, when?
Replacing ads in China and India.
DAI vs ITV? Where do you stand?
Can/will Broadcasters and TV suppliers build a new marketplace?

Hi Michael,
Great interview….
I couldn’t get the name of third competitor (after intonow and civolution). Can you please name it?
Thanks

Rags,
There are several companies that provide ACR technology.
Shazam provides audio fingerprinting for companion apps on connected devices.
Umami just came out of stealth and are also focused on companion apps.
Audible Magic has a developed business using audio watermarks for anti-piracy and are now starting to make moves in companion apps and possibly also ACR TV.
TV Interactive Systems and Bulldog United are both focused on video fingerprinting for one screen ACR-TV apps.
Not sure which one of those was the third company in the video, but that’s the list that I have.
Thanks Micheal.
TV Interactive Systems and Bulldog United was the one I was looking for.
Try it now. Not the best job of self-videography, by the way. I may have to stick to writing!
Your note is fortuitous. Was just thinking that it would be interesting to hear what you guys are up to. Let me know if anyone would like to discuss.
Cheers,
M
